Abstract

The Nigerian construction industry is experiencing rapid growth, driven by urbanization, infrastructure development, and a burgeoning population. However, this sector faces severe engineering challenges, including extreme tropical climatic conditions, aggressive subsoil chemistries, rapid rates of hydration, and recurring structural failures marked by building collapses. To mitigate these challenges and achieve structural durability and economic efficiency, the deployment of concrete and mortar admixtures has transitioned from an optional luxury to an absolute engineering necessity. This paper explores the definition, classifications (natural and artificial), and specific applications of admixtures within the Nigerian construction landscape. It critically examines their structural, economic, and environmental importance, providing a comprehensive assessment of how these chemical and mineral modifiers ensure infrastructural resilience in West Africa's largest economy.
