Abstract

The pursuit of sustainable development is a pressing global priority in the twenty-first century, with challenges such as environmental degradation, climate change, biodiversity loss, and socioeconomic inequalities threatening human well-being. This study investigates the role of innovative research and emerging technologies—specifically Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data Analytics, Industry 4.0 technologies, renewable energy systems, biotechnology, smart agriculture, and digital transformation frameworks—in promoting sustainable development. Utilizing a systematic literature review of peer-reviewed publications and international reports from 2021 to 2026, findings indicate that technological innovations significantly enhance resource efficiency and industrial productivity while promoting climate resilience and social inclusion. Statistical analyses reveal that renewable energy has the strongest positive impact on environmental outcomes (coefficient = 1.234), followed by AI (coefficient = 0.678) and robotics (coefficient = 0.567), underscoring the importance of these technologies in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving resource management. However, barriers to technology adoption, such as inadequate infrastructure, funding constraints, digital inequality, cybersecurity concerns, and policy inconsistencies, remain critical challenges. In light of these findings, the study proposes an integrated framework linking innovation ecosystems to sustainability outcomes and recommends strategic investments in targeted technologies to overcome barriers and enhance sustainability efforts. Such investments are essential for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
