This paper argues that strategically implemented artificial intelligence technologies constitute essential catalysts for equitable mathematics education and cognitive development in African contexts. Addressing the multidimensional crisis of poor learning outcomes, teacher shortages, and pedagogical deficits characterizing African mathematics education, the paper contends that AI-enhanced instruction-when deployed with pedagogical intentionality and equity-centred design-can dismantle barriers to mathematical literacy and accelerate conceptual understanding. Drawing on twenty recent peer-reviewed scholarly sources, the paper presents four interconnected arguments: AI-powered adaptive systems enable personalized learning pathways showing 20-30% performance improvements; intelligent tutoring systems provide cognitive scaffolding supporting mathematical reasoning; AI tools augment teacher capacity by automating routine tasks; and equity-centred implementation frameworks addressing infrastructure gaps are essential prerequisites. The paper challenges techno-sceptical positions dismissing AI as premature while rejecting uncritical techno-optimism overlooking systemic prerequisites. Policy implications emphasize coordinated investments in connectivity infrastructure, teacher professional development, and culturally responsive technology design.
